Real Stories: How OSAGO Protected Client Budgets

Many car owners in Uzbekistan see OSAGO (Compulsory Motor Third Party Liability Insurance) as just a formality imposed by law. However, behind the dry legal terms and numbers are real stories of people who avoided serious financial losses thanks to auto insurance. In this article, we’ll share several real-life cases from the practice of insurance companies in Uzbekistan, showing how an OSAGO policy truly protected clients’ finances.

Story 1: An Unexpected Obstacle on the Road

Rashid, 28, driving experience — 3 years, Tashkent:

“I was driving along the Small Ring Road on an ordinary weekday. Suddenly, the car in front of me braked sharply because a dog ran out onto the road. I didn’t have time to react and hit its rear bumper. Luckily, the speed was low and no one was hurt, but the other car’s bumper, trunk, and taillights were seriously damaged. Turned out it was a brand-new Toyota Camry.

We called the traffic police and filed an accident report. I was found to be at fault. The Camry’s owner presented a damage estimate — 12 million soums! That was an enormous sum for me, which I couldn’t afford to pay immediately. Fortunately, I had an active OSAGO policy, which I had purchased online. I contacted my insurance company right away.

The insurer quickly processed my claim, arranged a damage inspection, and within 20 days fully reimbursed the other party. I didn’t pay a single soum out of pocket. My OSAGO policy had cost about 300,000 soums — and saved me from paying 12 million! Since then, I always renew my car insurance on time and recommend others do the same.”

Story 2: Inexperience and Ice

Nigora, 25, driving experience — 6 months, Samarkand:

“I got my license just six months ago and bought my first car — a used Chevrolet Spark. Naturally, I got OSAGO online right away because I knew it was mandatory. In December, during the first snowfall, I misjudged my speed on a turn and skidded on the icy road. I crashed into a parked Mercedes-Benz GL. The damage was serious — the entire left side of the Mercedes was affected.

The owner was very upset and immediately said that repairs would cost at least 20 million soums. For me, a young professional with a modest salary, that was a catastrophic amount. I panicked, then remembered my OSAGO policy.

After we submitted all documents to the traffic police, we contacted my insurer. Even though the damage exceeded the OSAGO property damage limit (14 million soums), the company paid the maximum compensation possible. I had to pay the difference, but it was far less than the full amount. Auto insurance saved me from major debt and the need to take out a loan.”

Story 3: Small Accident, Big Consequences

Akmal, 35, driving experience — 10 years, Bukhara:

“Last year, I was involved in a minor accident — while changing lanes, I lightly scraped the side of another car. The damage seemed minimal — just a dent and a scratch on the door. The other driver and I decided not to call the police and settle things on the spot. I offered 500,000 soums in compensation, which seemed fair for the damage.

But two days later, the other driver called me and said that a detailed inspection at a service center revealed hidden damage — the structural element of the door was affected, requiring replacement and repainting. The total cost of repair was 4.5 million soums. He demanded full compensation and threatened to take legal action.

I contacted my insurer and explained the situation. Fortunately, my OSAGO policy covered such incidents, even if the accident wasn’t formally reported (though this is not recommended!). The insurance company conducted its own assessment, confirmed the validity of the claim, and paid compensation. This case taught me two things: always officially report accidents, and value your car insurance.”

Story 4: When People Are Injured

Dilshod, 42, driving experience — 15 years, Fergana:

“The most frightening incident in my driving life happened two years ago. I lost control of my car on a wet road and crashed into another vehicle. As a result, a passenger in the other car sustained moderate injuries — a broken arm and a concussion. They required hospitalization and long-term treatment.

In addition to the car repair (about 8 million soums), I had to deal with compensation for medical expenses and emotional damages. The total claim was around 20 million soums. For me and my family, that was an overwhelming amount.

Thanks to my active OSAGO policy, the insurance company covered both the vehicle repairs and the injured party’s treatment within the established limits. This allowed me to avoid severe financial problems and focus on recovering from the accident.”

Conclusion

These stories clearly show that OSAGO is not just a “piece of paper for the traffic police,” but a real financial protection tool. Even a minor accident can result in major expenses — especially if a luxury vehicle is damaged or someone is injured.

The cost of an OSAGO policy in Uzbekistan is relatively low (on average 300,000–500,000 soums per year for a passenger car), but the potential payout can reach up to 40 million soums. That makes auto insurance one of the smartest financial decisions for any car owner.

Don’t skimp on peace of mind — make sure to get and renew your OSAGO policy on time. These days, you can do it quickly and easily online — buying car insurance via the internet takes just a few minutes.
