    Travel insurance for Japan

Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka offer three different ways to explore Japan: a big city, historic neighbourhoods and trips around Kansai. Before you leave, check your policy's covered risks, how treatment is paid for and the assistance number. You will need these details if you have to see a doctor.

As of October 2026, an Uzbek citizen with an ordinary passport needs a Japanese visa before travelling. There is no visa on arrival; the Embassy of Japan in Tashkent accepts applications by prior online appointment. Uzbekistan is not on the checked list of eligible countries of residence for JAPAN eVISA. Before applying, check the latest rules on the embassy and Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs websites.

Medical insurance is not listed as mandatory in the embassy's published basic document checklist. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends international travel medical insurance; the embassy may ask for additional documents. For more on choosing a policy for your visa, see our visa insurance page.

The EXCLUSIVE plan is valid in Japan, with a total limit of up to €90,000 and up to €45,000 for medical services. Coverage applies to insured events under the policy terms. Explore travel insurance.

When can insurance help in Japan?

If you suddenly fall ill or get injured abroad, you need to know where to go, how to arrange care and which documents to keep. In its “Travel Insurance in Japan” guide, JNTO advises travellers to check how medical bills are paid and what their insurance covers in advance.

    Medical services

Under EXCLUSIVE, up to €45,000 within the total limit. COVID-19 care has a limit of up to €25,000 within the medical services limit.

    Transport

Medical transport and other services have a category limit of up to €42,000; individual services have their own sublimits.

    What is not covered

Planned treatment is not covered. Conditions known before the trip are subject to policy restrictions. For active sports, check the relevant risk and option in your policy separately.

The EXCLUSIVE policy has a total limit of up to €90,000; category limits do not add to that amount. Learn what counts as a sudden illness.

How do you choose a plan for Japan?

In the calculator, select Japan and enter your travel dates and traveller details. EXCLUSIVE (+COVID) is available for this destination; review its terms before paying.

    Travel dates

Your policy period should cover your planned stay. Check the start date in your quote.

    Travellers and ages

Enter each traveller's details accurately: they are used to calculate the price.

    Activities and options

If you plan to do active sports or climb a mountain, check that the relevant risk is available and listed in your policy.

The calculator will show the current price once you enter your trip details.

What should you know before visiting Japan?

    Tokyo

Japan's capital is a big city. Allow time on your first day for transport and the time difference.

    Kyoto

Temples and historic neighbourhoods are easy to explore on foot. Check routes and opening hours in advance.

    Osaka

Known for its food and a convenient starting point for trips around Kansai.

    Mount Fuji

You can enjoy views of the mountain without climbing it. If you plan to ascend, check the season, trail rules and sports coverage.

Cherry blossom season varies by region in spring. Summers can be hot and humid, typhoons are possible in August–September, and autumn brings colourful foliage. Closer to departure, check the weather and local restrictions in JNTO's “Weather & Geography” guide.

For a medical emergency in Japan, call 119. The Japan Visitor Hotline assists tourists around the clock in English, Chinese and Korean. It is a separate tourist helpline; for an insurance claim, call the assistance number in your policy. Rules for bringing personal medication into Japan depend on the medicine, so check with MHLW before travelling.

Planning to climb Mount Fuji or take another active route? Check the sports risk in your policy and see insurance for active travel.

What should you do if you need care in Japan?

    1. Get help first

For urgent medical help, call 119. If you cannot contact assistance before treatment, do so as soon as you can.

    2. Contact assistance

Call the number in your policy and provide your policy details. The assistance provider will explain how to arrange care and agree on expenses.

    3. Keep your documents

If you paid for treatment yourself, keep your medical reports, bills and receipts. Reimbursement depends on the policy terms and approval process.

Medical repatriation is a separate service with its own terms and sublimit under EXCLUSIVE.
